AI automation grants in Spain: Kit Digital

AI automation grants in Spain: Kit Digital

· by Panayot Dimkov

Anyone looking for AI automation grants in Spain almost always lands on Kit Digital: dozens of pages are headed "Kit Digital 2026" and explain how to apply. Most of them describe a programme whose calls have already closed, and the same goes for Kit Consulting. This article starts there, because the first decision — whether to wait for a grant or not — depends on knowing what is genuinely open.

What the official sources say as of October 2026: on Acelera pyme, the programme's own portal, it states literally that the Kit Digital calls have finished. On the Red.es electronic office, the Segment III procedure carries the label deadline closed, having ended on 31 October 2025, and Kit Consulting's application window closed on 31 March 2025. Until another national call opens, the available routes are mostly of a different kind: financing and tax incentives.

That said, the rest of this article is not about the status of a call — that changes, which is why it is linked to the source rather than written here — but about what does not expire: which types of aid exist for an automation project, which requirements always repeat, and why it is unwise to hang the project on a grant.

1Why the pages contradict each other

It is not that some are lying and others are not. It is that two different things share a name and move separately.

What it isStatus
Regulatory basis The programme's legal framework, amended several times. In January 2026, Order TDF/39/2026 (official gazette of 28 January) extended it until the funds run out and allows leftover funds to be reallocated to applications that missed out for lack of budget Live, still being amended
Calls for applications The specific windows in which an application can be submitted, by company size segment Closed

The rules still changing explains the "Kit Digital 2026" headlines: there is real regulatory movement. But extending the rules or reallocating leftover funds to applications already filed is not the same as opening a new application window. To know whether you can apply for something today, the only place that counts is the procedure on the electronic office.

Something similar happens with the 40 million euros for AI in SMEs that some pages present as a "Kit Digital AI". That money belongs to a general invitation Red.es opened in September 2026 for business and professional associations and technology centres, which must develop AI use cases that SMEs and start-ups can reuse. An SME cannot apply for it directly.

Rule of thumb: if a page tells you "how to apply" but does not link to the specific procedure with its deadline, it is not looking at the call, it is rewriting an old article.

2The four types of grant for AI automation

Beyond any specific programme, public funding for digitalisation almost always follows one of these four formats. Recognising them helps you know what to look for when something opens.

01
A voucher to buy a solution
The Kit Digital model: an amount assigned to your company, spent by hiring a previously registered provider, within a catalogue of categories. You do not receive money: you receive purchasing capacity.
02
A voucher for advisory services
The Kit Consulting model: it does not pay for implementation, it pays for the diagnosis and the roadmap. Its published tiers were 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 euros by company size, between 10 and 249 employees, and it took applications until 31 March 2025.
03
Favourable financing
Loans with better rates or terms than the market, sometimes with a grace period. It is not free money, but it does not compete for an application window and tends to be continuously available.
04
Tax incentives
Deductions applied in the tax return, not at the moment of spending. They require the project to fit a specific definition, and in practice it is wise to back them with a technical report, so not every automation project qualifies.

The first two are the most searched for and the ones that depend on a call. The last two are less eye-catching and considerably more stable over time. If what you want to automate is the plant — robots, lines or machinery — rather than the office, the support schemes are different; we cover them in our article on EU funding for industrial automation.

3What is always required

Conditions vary from one programme to another, but there is a core that repeats across practically every digitalisation grant. Having it sorted in advance is the difference between being able to apply and being left out over a certificate.

  • Being up to date with the tax authority and social security. This is evidenced with certificates that expire, so request them when the call is announced, not before.
  • Not qualifying as an undertaking in difficulty under the European definition, and not being subject to a pending recovery order.
  • A minimum trading history. There is usually a minimum number of months of registered activity, which rules out newly formed companies.
  • The de minimis aid ceiling. The general cap is 300,000 euros of de minimis aid per undertaking over any three-year period (Regulation (EU) 2023/2831); if you have received other aid of this kind, it counts.
  • A prior digital self-assessment. In the Kit Digital model you must complete a self-diagnosis test before applying. It is short, but it blocks anyone who leaves it to the last day.
  • Hiring a registered provider. Not just any supplier: they must be on the programme's list, and that constrains who you can work with.
The last point is the one that surprises people most. Aid of this kind does not fund the project you want with whoever you want: it funds a catalogue category, delivered by someone on the list, with minimum requirements set by the rules. That may coincide with what you need, or it may not.

4Why the project should not depend on the grant

This is the uncomfortable part and the most important. A grant changes when you do the project and with how much headroom, not whether you should do it.

⏳
You do not set the timetable
Months pass between a call opening, being resolved and becoming executable. If the process is costing you hours every week, that time is paid anyway — in salaries rather than licences.
📦
The catalogue dictates the scope
When a project is designed to fit a fundable category, you end up automating what the voucher covers instead of what actually hurts. It is the most common way of spending money well on something that was not the priority.
🧾
Justification has a cost
Documenting, filing and maintaining the obligations for the required period consumes internal time. It does not cancel out the aid, but it is rarely counted when comparing.
🎯
If it only works with aid, it does not work
An automation project that only stands up with a grant is a project whose return does not survive analysis. It is worth reviewing the numbers before looking for someone to pay for it.

The sensible order is the reverse of the usual one: first work out whether the project stands on its own — we explain it in how to calculate automation ROI — and then look for aid that accelerates it. If the return is there, a grant is an improvement. If it is not, a grant only makes you lose less money.

5How to be ready for the next window

Calls open at short notice and, when they are awarded in order of arrival, the funds can run out before the closing date. What you can do today, without waiting for anything:

01
Have the process mapped
What is done, who does it, how long it takes and where it fails. Without that there is no budget or technical report to submit, and it is the slowest thing to produce.
02
Have the budget closed
With scope and price, not a verbal estimate. When the window opens, whoever already has it submits within days and whoever does not starts requesting quotes.
03
Have the paperwork current
Certificates of good standing, filed accounts, evidence of average headcount. Slow formalities nobody remembers until they are needed.
04
Watch the right source
The awarding body's electronic office and the official gazette. Alerts from blogs and consultancies arrive late and often wrong.

To check the real status at any time, the two references are the Acelera pyme portal and the Red.es electronic office, where each procedure appears with its deadline. This article is informative: the amounts and conditions it cites correspond to what those bodies have published and may have changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kit Digital still open in 2026?

No. The Acelera pyme portal states that the programme's calls have finished, and on the Red.es electronic office the procedures appear with the deadline closed: the Segment III one, for example, ended on 31 October 2025. In January 2026 Order TDF/39/2026 extended the rules until the funds run out and allows leftover funds to be reallocated to applications that missed out for lack of budget, but that does not open a new application window, and that is the confusion many pages carry.

Did Kit Digital cover artificial intelligence solutions?

Yes. The call for medium-sized companies (50 to 249 employees), open from December 2024 to 30 June 2025, added three categories with associated AI: customer management, business intelligence and analytics, and process management, with vouchers of 25,000 and 29,000 euros by company size. Categories and amounts depended on the segment and on each call, so the detail lies in the applicable order and procedure, not in a summary.

What is the difference between Kit Digital and Kit Consulting?

Kit Digital funded hiring a specific solution from a registered provider. Kit Consulting funded advice: a diagnosis and a roadmap in areas such as artificial intelligence, data or cybersecurity, with vouchers of 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 euros by company size, between 10 and 249 employees, and its application window closed on 31 March 2025. Kit Consulting paid for deciding what to do; Kit Digital, for doing it.

Is it worth waiting for a call before automating?

It depends on what waiting costs. If the process consumes several hours a week, every month of waiting has a real salary cost that is rarely compared with the voucher amount. The honest way to decide is to calculate the project's return without aid: if it stands alone, the grant is a bonus; if it only stands with the grant, the problem is the project.

Can I choose whichever provider I want with this kind of aid?

Not in voucher programmes. You have to contract with a provider registered in the programme and within a catalogue category, meeting minimum requirements set by the rules. It is a significant limitation: it constrains who you work with and, in practice, what gets automated.

In short

The Kit Digital and Kit Consulting calls are closed, however many articles keep appearing on how to apply. What remains valid is the pattern: vouchers to buy solutions, vouchers for advice, soft financing and tax incentives, all with a recurring core of requirements that can be sorted in advance.

And the practical conclusion is the same in every scenario: if the process is costing you hours every week, that cost is running already. It is worth having the project analysed and budgeted, so that aid — if it comes — accelerates it rather than defines it. That is what we do in AI process automation.
